    What do the numbers mean?

The same five faces and colours are used everywhere on this page.

Where do these numbers come from?

Malaysia has machines that sniff how dirty the air is. They are called air quality monitoring stations, and there are 68 of them all over the country. About once an hour each one sends back a number: the Air Pollutant Index — API for short. The smaller the number, the cleaner the air.

This page reads the same public numbers that Malaysia's Department of Environment (JAS) publishes, and arranges them state by state. It is a friendly viewer, not an official government page.

    How fresh are the numbers?

Stations measure about once an hour, so the same numbers can stay on screen for a while — that is normal. This page fetches the newest numbers when you open it, then quietly checks again every five minutes. The line under the title always tells you when the stations last measured and when this page last checked.

What does the little +1 or −1 mean?

Beside a reading, a small chip compares it with the hour before. +1 means the number went up by one, so the air got a little dirtier. −1 means it went down by one, so the air got a little cleaner. 0 means it stayed the same. Hover over a chip to see which hour it is compared with. If a place has no chip yet, it has not sent an earlier reading in the last 24 hours.
